24” × 32” | Mimosa Bark Tanned | Hand Softened | One of a Kind
This beautiful small lambskin was locally sourced from a New Hampshire butcher, where the hide would otherwise have been discarded or composted. Rather than allowing a useful natural material to go to waste, I preserved it using a traditional bark-tanning process and gave it a second life as a durable, naturally tanned sheepskin. It is mostly a beautiful creamy white but has lovely black markings near the neck.
The hide was tanned using mimosa extract, a plant-based tannin, and then softened entirely by hand. The result is a supple, naturally textured leather with the character and imperfections that make a truly handmade hide unique.
The breed of sheep is unknown. This particular hide has a relatively short, low-wool texture, and may be from a hair-sheep mix, although I cannot say that with certainty. The fleece is soft and somewhat shaggy rather than densely woolly, giving this skin a rustic, almost fur-like appearance.
The hide measures approximately 24” × 32” and retains its natural shape, coloring, and markings. There are also natural variations and minor imperfections from the animal's life and the tanning process—these are part of the story and character of a naturally sourced hide rather than flaws.
This would make a lovely rug, chair or bench covering, meditation/prayer mat, wall hanging, textile project, or rustic natural-fiber accent. It would also be a beautiful material for someone who appreciates traditional tanning, locally sourced materials, and giving useful animal byproducts a second life.
