26” × 38” | Mimosa Tanned | Hand Softened | Locally Sourced
This one-of-a-kind lambskin was locally sourced from a New Hampshire butcher shop, where the hide would otherwise have been composted. I rescued and preserved it through a traditional plant-tanning process, giving a useful local byproduct a second life.
The hide was tanned with mimosa extract, a natural vegetable tannin, and then softened entirely by hand. The finished skin is supple and flexible, with a beautifully natural appearance and a soft, short wool fleece that has a low, plush texture rather than a long or heavily curled coat.
The sheep's breed is unknown, but its fine, short fleece gives this hide a particularly soft and approachable feel. As with any naturally sourced hide, it has its own unique shape, coloring, markings, and subtle variations that reflect the individual animal and the handmade tanning process.
Measuring approximately 26” × 38”, this hide would be lovely as a small rug, chair or bench covering, meditation mat, wall hanging, nursery accent, or natural-fiber textile piece.
